What an irony

It is with much angst that I write this entry today. My hubby is away on his first of many future overseas projects in his new company. We are both excited for this opportunity to work in a different country and receive a better remuneration yet also troubled by the sacrifice of being separated from his wife and children for long periods of time.

Yet who am I to complain? When I look at my domestic helper from Philippines, I too am guilty of encouraging the ‘separation’ of mother from children by providing the job opening in my household. I didn’t think much about how she might feel being away from her loved ones until I too am faced with the same situation.

Globalisation has indeed opened wonderful opportunities for people to explore employment overseas in return for better prospects and income, but is the cost of such a decision on the family life worth it? I guess only time will tell.
